Guided tours

The guided tours reveal many secrets and stories about the Scaramanga family, Villa Mirasasso and its garden. Details, of how the garden was made, who lived in it, what it meant to whom. Myths and legends about individual trees and other plants, their meaning and use are revealed. Descriptive explanations by those who work in the garden today and live with it. You are taken through the old and new parts of the garden, into the greenhouse from 1890, and also the Interpretation Centre of Karst Vegetation.

Individual visitors and groups of up to 10 people (with the exception of large families) can view the Sežana Botanical Garden on their own upon the purchase of a daily or an annual pass. During opening hours, based on the winter and summer schedule, anyone can walk through the garden, see the greenhouse and the Karst Vegetation Interpretation Centre, and peacefully observe the natural and cultural wonders as well as the tone of the healing voice of nature.

For individuals who want to learn more about the Mirasasso garden and compulsorily for groups of over 10 people, on the basis of prior notification we offer guided tours with a house guide throughout the year. Guided tours are given in Slovenian, Italian, Croatian, English and German.

2. »Cedar« guided tour

tour of the garden and 1890 greenhouse (program for various target groups)

The guided tour includes:

  • presentation of the history of the garden and its importance today
  • tour of the greenhouse
  • tour of the old part of the garden, which was designed by the Scaramanga family, and
  • the revitalised part of the garden, recently renovated by the Municipality of Sežana

Description of the tour:

The descriptive narrative reveals the story of the Scaramanga family, the known facts and unwritten secrets of Villa Mirasasso and the particularities of its garden. We will take you to the 1890 greenhouse, present its story, its past appearance, its past and present purpose, and then walk around the garden. At first through the old part of the garden, past boxwood, century old cedars and other exotic trees, clay sculptures, ponds and pergolas, to the pine forest and glades, until we finally descend into the new part of the garden, which the Municipality of Sežana recently restored. On the way to the modernist restored part of the garden, we float between the present and the past, while revealing the particularities of individual plants, stories of individual corners of the garden, tales, legends and much more …

2. »Oak« guided tour

The sound of the bora, the rustle of trees, the sound of birdsong. And the scent of juniper, karst savory, sage. And an unique vista, as if you are now in the underground Karst kingdom, now in the forest, now on the Karst commons. A guided tour through the Karst Vegetation Interpretation Centre is an experiential tour. With sight, touch, scent and sound. About the nature of the Karst and man, who has co-created a unique landscape over the centuries. It is now overgrown, now desolate, and then again covered with forest and grasslands. Adorned with numerous karstic forms and stone works of art created by nature, interwoven with the drystone walls erected by man. Beauties that we want to present in a unique way and bring closer to visitors, so that they want to see these beauties in nature itself.

Description of the tour:

The hour-and-a-half guided tour takes you back to 1848, with a brief presentation of the Scaramanga family, its Villa Mirasasso and the garden, which the family designed in the style of Italian bourgeois gardens. When we return to today, we enter the greenhouse for a moment, then walk through the garden with a presentation of the most important plants and cultural elements of the garden. The guided tour carries the name "Smoketree", since it unites, in addition to familiarisation with the Villa Mirasasso garden, which boasts plants from various parts of the world, also a visit to the Interpretation Centre of Karst Vegetation, which, with its presentations, leads visitors to the attractions and beauties of the Karst commons. In a single tour, we present to you two completely different worlds - a garden on Karst soil, modelled on foreign examples, and at the same time, in an interactive and didactic way, the Karst landscape, which you can see in life merely by taking one further step.

4. »Black pine« guided tour

Description of the tour:

A two-and-a-half hour descriptive journey through the 170-year-old garden, getting to know the plants brought by seamen of the Scaramanga family from different parts of the world, and the greenhouse in which they overwintered temperature sensitive plants. This is followed by a halt during which there is a short workshop using natural materials from the garden. In the second half of the tour, we view the Karst Vegetation Interpretation Centre, where we present interesting features of the Karst landscape. We show an animated film about the changing Karst over the last 12,000 years, an animation presentation of the changing karst surface, formation of sinkholes and dolines, touching on various rocks characteristic of the Karst, we smell karst herbs and much more.

5. »Ginkgo« guided tour

Description of the tour:

The "Gynko" guided tour is a professional guided tour for groups of various natural history profiles and ages, and the tour is appropriate for groups of individuals from the age of 15 years upwards. With an emphasis on the presentation of selected particularly interesting plants, we walk from tree to tree, from shrub to shrub and other plants, with each example studied in depth. In doing so, we encourage the participation of tour members. We therefore anticipate a lively gathering, a special experience, filled with knowledge, research, learning and unforgettable social interaction.

General and cancellation terms and discounts

Splošni in odpovedni pogoji ter popusti:

  • groups of over 10 people can only see the garden with a house guide,
  • guided tours must be notified or booked at least 24 hours prior to the scheduled arrival,
  • confirmation of the day, time and tour is conditional on the availability of guides, which means that manager of garden reserves the right not to confirm a tour,
  • the final cost of an individual or group tour up to 10 people is defined based on the age of visitors (in the case of a mixed-age group, a higher tour price applies),
  • tours ordered on the day of the tour will be charged a supplement of 20%,
  • if the group is late and does not give advance notice of the delay at least 3 hours before the scheduled start of the tour, manager of the garden reserves the right to charge waiting hours at a cost of 20.00 € with VAT,
  • in the case of a group being late, manager of the garden reserves the right to modify or shorten the program of the guided tour, with no change to the tour price,
  • if a group arrives more than 60 minutes later than the forecast time, manager of the garden reserves the right to cancel the guided tour and will charge 100% of the cost of the booked tour,
  • payment of a guided tour is possible by cash (for individuals up to a value of 5.000,00 € with VAT, and for legal entities 420,00 € with VAT) or on the basis of an invoice. Payment method is provided when booking a guided tour,
  • the price list applies to organized group and individual guided tours from 1/7/ 2019 until recall or price changes.
